Make Baked Beans - Recipe

Three Methods:Spicing up Canned BeansPreparing Beans from ScratchRecipe Variations

Traditionally served in a rich sauce with pork or bacon, baked beans are a wholesome, versatile dish that's great as a snack or as a meal's centerpiece dish. Prepared from a can or from scratch, baked beans are easy to cook and even easier to eat! This recipe shows you how to make a generous baked bean dish that can feed a whole family with leftovers to spare.

  • Three 28-oz storebought cans of pre-cooked navy beans OR about 3.5 cups of dry cannellini or navy beans
  • Optional: 8 slices of bacon (thick-sliced is best)
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, diced
  • 3/4 cup barbecue sauce
  • 2/3 cup molasses
  • 2 teaspoons mustard (Dijon is best)
  • 1/4 cup white or cider vinegar

Method 1 of 3: Spicing up Canned Beans

  1. Make Baked Beans Step 1.jpg
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. The best baked beans are cooked slowly at a medium-low heat for a thick, well-cooked consistency - nothing's worse than thin or soupy baked beans. Make sure you have time in your schedule to periodically check on the beans for the several hours they're in the oven.
  2. Make Baked Beans Step 2.jpg
Add barbecue sauce, molasses, mustard and vinegar to a mixing bowl. Mix until combined. Set aside.
    • If you don't have molasses, you can try substituting 1/2 cup of brown sugar. If you have molasses, but don't have enough, try substituting 1/2 cup of white sugar with a teaspoon of molasses.
