Why empowr (part 8)

Hello everyone,

Together, we've been reading the Why empowr book, written by one of the empowr founders.

If you're interested in why empowr was created, or want to know where it's headed, this is a good way to find out.

Just joining the conversation? You can read the earlier parts here:
Part 1:   Here
Part 2:   Here
Part 3:  Here
Part 4:  Here
Part 5:  Here
Part 6:  Here
Part 7:  Here

As always, many thanks for your thoughtful comments that you left in the earlier parts; we're all reading your comments very carefully (and deleting spam and unrelated comments).

Thank you!

Around the world, democracy is in greater danger
than any time in recent history

The news from Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union in the 1990’s, the fall of the Berlin Wall, those were a time when the march of democracy and freedom in the world seemed inevitable. Every time you opened up a newspaper, you expected to see another country opening its arms to freedom.

And today? The trend is leaning in the opposite direction. Recently the watchdog group Freedom House released its annual report on freedom and democracy around the world. It analyzed nearly 200 countries, based on the United Nation's declaration of human rights. They concluded that democracy is in greater danger than anytime in the last 25 years, with 36% of the world’s population not being free, 24% partly free, and 40% free.

According to their report, democracy has been declining for the last decade. In 2014, 61 countries saw their freedom decline and 33 saw their freedom improve, the worse showing in over ten years.

If you look at the 21st century overall, freedom has peaked, according to Freedom House. The least free area of the world is Africa and the Middle East, where 85% of the population is not free. The exception is Tunisia—which just a decade ago, had one of the most tyrannical governments in the world.

Dictatorship is on the rise, and its nature is changing—they’re no longer even pretending to be democratic. Russia’s invasion of Crimea is the most noticeable example. China is arresting activists more than ever and now even televising their confessions.

In Egypt the military has taken over and the courts sentenced hundreds of political prisoners to be executed in fake trials.

There are a good number of dictatorships such as Ethiopia, Azerbaijan and Vietnam, which have managed to avoid the Western media’s attention but are just as oppressive.

It’s not all bad news, with the Ukrainians revolting against their government despite Russian efforts—and we’ve also seen some very interesting resistance to oppression in Hong Kong.

The bottom line is that at the end of the cold war, it appeared for a moment that freedom was an unstoppable force, but every force has an undercurrent and perhaps that’s what we’re seeing these days.

***

At empowr, we are huge believers in the power of democracy. Even though it has some serious challenges, it absolutely can be fixed. In the fifteen years that we’ve been working on empowr, hardly a few days passed where we weren’t thinking about and discussing the news, the issues as we saw them and what we could do, as concerned citizens and technologists, to make a difference. More importantly, we have spent all of those years designing, coding, and integrating dozens of interconnected technologies with the objective of making a difference in the direction and future of democracy. If we don’t try to help in the only way we can, then we, too, can’t do a damned thing other than complain.

One critical way we can make peaceful revolutions possible again is by helping voters understand that their democracy is dying and that its only hope for survival is to impose limits on how many terms any politician may serve, as well as on how much money any single person or entity can give them or spend directly or indirectly on their election campaigns.

The most successful way this has been done in the past is by enabling every citizen to have affordable access to a world-class education—an absolutely essential part of ensuring that democracy endures.

In the next part, we'll get right into that...

Even if our future freedom is under a big question mark, we remain reasons to believe in it and do not lose hope. Prospects for democracy are controversial, vague, but they exist. The crisis has created new dangers, it has opened new possibilities, but most importantly - has imposed a regime of unprecedented responsibility. Not only that, we are obliged to speak uninterrupted charm our commitment to the values of freedom, of enlightenment and social justice, but also to act every day, defending them and strengthening them.

Yes, the only way to understand how democracy work is through education. Through there are many lazy neighbors who want to do it in a shortcut way or just guessing or of whom, who don´t want to read in order to learn. We even notice it on Empowr. Many who don´t want reading and the result is making complaints, why, why, why? It is because they never even touch the Learning Center page. It´s totally free to learn in there.

Though all this are very challenging but there is still a way to help them, like make a campaign in order to reach the people that they must. There are ways if there is a WILL-

Fantastic book! Congrats to you! II enjoyed reading it, as I came from Romania escaping the Ceausescu dictatorship, only to get a "taste" of the Trump's tyranny and dictatorship here in the USA. In my opinion , there are no ready templates for the democracy that could be used to shape or form every society or apply it by force, especially between the communities of religious beliefs rooted, as an example, in the Middle East , the democracy is still as: 2 wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch!

Is empowr putting in its consideration that some elected presidents may not be able to travel to USA, and thinking to find a way to rule the community from an outside office?

Consciousness about the fact that people are not slaves, only it will save the world from this oppressive system.
We need a new kind of education, which is not under government control because since school ending with universities we are taught to obey the rulers and execute the orders.
We must create a state within a state, civil society organizations consisting of smart people who will be working with people raising their self-knowledge.
I think empowr will do it, if he goes to the end, without putting forces, as empowr could integrate peoples from of the world under one goal.
Good luck in business started! We are with you!

Hi Arman, it's so refreshing to see that you're really thinking about important aspects of any nation (specfically education), and that you're connecting those aspects to empowr. It's great thinking like this that will ultimately help empowr to constantly improve its own educational system. We're glad to have you on board, Arman! Thanks for sharing.

I'm guessing the word democracy in Empowr means something a little different than my conception of the word. I've always been taught that in democracy every vote counts, ( in the case of America if every vote counted Hillary would have won.) If every vote counts the more populated areas have a much greater say than the less populated areas. My history book taught me there has never been a successful democracy. That's why America is a republic instead even though it has become corrupt and needs to return to the constitution. I like everything I read about a democracy here on Empowr. This book is helping me see the goals of Empowr more clearly and hopefully, I'll see more clearly Empowr's definition of democracy.

Hi Sheryl, as you know democracy is quite complex, with many layers and components . We're glad that these chapters are helping you build connections with examples of democracies today, and what empowr is trying to build. Please feel free to share any other insights you may have, and how empowr can continue to strive towards becoming a more democratic platform. Thanks Sheryl!

Sadly, Democracy and freedom are easy to take for granted. I have been advocating term limits, (originally self imposed by the early congressmen and senators) and campaign reforms ever since I first was old enough to understand and participate in our governmental process (around 1976). I've also said that the two parties have a stranglehold on our government and our voting system so that new parties and new choices are not presented. That's been going on since the 1800's. I hope I live to see the day that this author's dream of reform and democratic revival come true. It will give me great pleasure to be a part of that. But, I also hope that we come to an understanding that just giving everyone a vote is not democracy, it is giving everyone a choice that makes a democracy a democracy. If you give everyone a vote, but then only give them one choice it is not a vote. He is right that education is the key, which is why the socialists have infiltrated our educational system and are teaching our youth to hate our type of government and hate our selves. They are teaching lies and worrying about being politically correct, a concept that is neither correct nor political.

Hello Mthalfangel,

In the last election, there were 10 candidates to start and you got to vote for 5 in the first round. Then in the second round, there were 5 and everyone got to vote for 2. Then the final 2 are flown to San Diego where there is a debate. After that, we voted for 1 candidate to be the president. This year there could be more candidates than 10 to start we will have to see what empowr has in store for that.

best regards,
Bob

Hi all empowrs !
I agree with many of you here within some points of view...Katherine ,Ivana,Randy and Riza , Sheryl . We're coming from all over the world and our experiences with democracy are different. If we want to create a wonderful democratic community we need to understand each other. There's a minor of people who can express themselves here cause of language barrier .There are so many kind and patience people here who're trying to help in every possible way to other people to understand what's the empowr mission about. Most our clients at platforrm don't understand English at all ,but trough their actions is visible they're the right people to improve the empowr vision of our better future.
I'm not SC and not paid for my extra hours almost every day trough my inbox but just can't refuse to help people in the best way I can to explain things I've read and learned here on empowr .But my advantage is definitely the language acording to others who have realy big issues with all kind of translate pages and apps. I really sympathize with those who're willing to learn but there's noone available for help on the right time. From my point of wiev the #1 priority here should be providing people to understand and be understood between each other.
I have to mention also one thing which is not the main subject here but much important .Those are the newest changes of SC's even few weekly . It's really confusing and annoying for new people here. I know why this is happening but the newbies have no idea ,they're strugling to get answers on their questions and felt left from everyone while seeing others geting more successful each day. That's why I mentioned language issues as well. And have to underline importance of better education of the newest coaches. They just can't talk with clients in agresive and pushing way as I've heard from few people - I had also this experience the first day with one of the newest coaches . But since i know about things how they work I had prepared proves that I was right even was told before that I'm iresponsible and having fun here on empowr.
And my answer between other things was that coaches are here for us to correct our mistakes not to atack. I have to say all best things about my first coach, about his patience ,politenes and compassion and he can be the example to most of other coaches for great work here on empowr. I hope after this period of coach changes I'll manage to get back to my first coach cause if I'll succeed here want him to get the credits for my work.
Thank you for reading my thoughts at this moment !
Wish you all the much success in everything you do ! Wish empowr to change the world !

Hi Blue Bird - your passion and exceeding level of care and concern is very clear. We are so thankful to have thoughtful and amazing citizens such as yourself, continuously speaking up and sharing your experiences with us. Thank you for sharing some of the areas you're most concerned about, as each point you made will be discussed by the empowr team. You're right that education is crucial, and we specifically need to ensure that our newest ctiziens are better understanding the platform. Thank you again for speaking up, and we look forward to improving every day with help from citizens such as yourself! Thanks Blue Bird :)

Very interesting chapter and all the previous ones. There is one small problem because it is a translator. I am not good in English literature but I think for people who read through the translator is not always understood the true meaning of some of the proposals. Thank you if you read my comment C / Y Talgat.

Issue solution about democracy consists not in election of other senators or the president, and in creation of the e-government, when each citizen of the country can offer specifically the opinion through the Internet on any question, whether it be road construction or acceptance of the budget. But that so the person could accept such critical decisions, it should be not simply the resident of this country, namely the citizen: the person who is realizing the responsibility for the decision made by it. Therefore it is necessary to develop and enter at schools new subject matter — a civil liability.

Hi A.Liubov, well said! :) I like this term you've used: e-governemnt. This is especially interesting to think about. You make phenomenal points, and we're so lucky to have such thoughtful citizens such as yourself. We hope you'll enjoy the next chapters as well! Thanks!
